Any exposure figure sounds alarming in isolation. The useful question is comparative: how does 271 internet-facing refrigeration management interfaces compare with other exposed device classes, and what does that ratio tell a defender?
An honest comparison is hard
ZoomEye supports queries across many device classes, but counts are only comparable when the fingerprints are equally reliable. A camera query and a refrigeration controller query have different naming conventions, different installation bases and different degrees of vendor standardisation.
Rather than compare raw totals across classes, compare behaviour within one class.
What the refrigeration numbers show
On 21 October 2026, title="StoreView Web" returned 271 assets. Five days earlier, Censys measured nearly 3,000 internet-exposed Danfoss StoreView control panels, of which more than 1,800 were in France. By 14 October, the French figure was 537.
Two different fingerprints, two different providers, and a sharp drop in one country. The pattern, not the absolute magnitude, is the finding: exposure was concentrated, it was measurable, and it responded to a national alert.
Where refrigeration differs from webcams
A webcam that is exposed leaks images. A refrigeration controller that is reached can spoil food, and the Paris prosecutor's office said the attack caused fires. Consequence per device is unusually high for something installed by a third party on a facilities budget.
That asymmetry is the argument for treating even a modest count as material.
A better comparison for your own estate
Compare your estate against your own previous measurement. Repeat the query, note the delta, and check whether the change matches the change you intended. That comparison is available every month without negotiating data-sharing agreements.
